About
Rind and Root is an independent literary journal of poetry, criticism, and visual work. We are free, online, and international by design. While our main goal is promoting emerging writers, we publish everyone from everywhere (as long as the work is written in, or has a translation to English).
We publish:
– Poetry: free verse, prose poems, erasure, blackout poetry. Any experimental genres that can be expressed on paper.
– Prose: literary reviews and criticism on any related subjects (novels, poems, art).
– Visual work: collage, photography, art. However, visual work displayed in our issues is mostly chosen to complement literary pieces.
We do not publish formal verse, rhyme schemes, nature lyric (unless nature is doing metaphorical work), love poems, or anything with too much existing space for it. We say this up front so writers don’t waste a submission (even a free one is still a chunk of your time).
Themes:
Thematically, we are interested in cross-cultural, identity-transforming, direct, experimental works with risk to them. We do not shy away from politics and stand for what we believe in.
What we offer
We are run on labor rather than capital (we are poor). There is no payment for submissions, but we have what to offer instead:
Publication in a curated, edited journal.
Editorial feedback on accepted pieces, honest explanation for rejected ones.
Promotion of contributors’ work across our channels.
A community of editors and writers who take poetry (and you, no matter where you are in your career) seriously.
We are open to previously published work and simultaneous submissions. Instead of first serial rights, we are interested in getting good work to our readers and helping you grow as writers and artists 🙂
